I agree Auren. When I was getting ready to leave my last CIO role instead of looking for another, I decided that I could do the best, most interesting part of the job as a fractional CIO and advisor. I left a great CIO role, working with some of the smartest engineers and scientists in the world. But after just a few months I'm finding the opportunity to learn more, do more and help more people!

I work in leadership and board talent. The organisations of the future will have to pursue fluid operating models where increasingly people focus on discreet project orientated goals , this lends itself to more of a fractional workplace structure where success is determined by impact, outcome and sustainable improvements. What affect will AI have on the model remains to be seen, but the future winning corporate model maybe entirely run by people who are on fractional , short term contracts where success is judged by what they deliver within a fixed period of time within a business. If they continue to deliver and succeed their contracts will be extended , if not they are replaced.

Do you find the tradeoff between having 1-2 hours of an A+ executive vs many more hours, care, and commitment from a B+ executive reasonable?

I guess I've always been pretty hesitant towards people only half in the boat, it feels like that's sometimes a net-negative.

you want A+ talent. but most organizations cannot hire an A+ exec -- they just won't work for you unless you are Stripe or Anduril. so you need to settle for A+ person that is an up-and-comer and rent the A+ exec.

I agree. I think you also need to be careful to not think someone in this type of fractional role is only “half in” - this has NOT been the case for me personally in the fractional executive work that I take on. I’m all in with the companies I’ll do fractional work for… I feel very much like I’m part of a team - I’m just working fewer hours so I’m not full-time… which is win-win. I get more work-life flexibility but when I’m working for a company, I’m all in.
